Introduction
Am I Rich? Was a major editorial piece to celebrate the launch of the updated Telegraph Life section of the website, beginning with Telegraph Money. A bespoke experience that allowed users to understand how their financial situation compares to those around them, in their neighbourhood or their demographic. Helping readers to answer the questions: “Am I rich?” and “Do I feel rich?”. This project was a collaboration between multiple designers, I led layout and data.
Project challenges
Provide users with a real sense of their wealth in comparison to the rest of the UK. Both being highly informative and entertaining.
Launch alongside an all new Money page, helping better establish the visual language of Telegraph Life.
Opening
The beginning questions of the piece set the tone for the rest of the experience. It introduces users with the question: "Do you feel rich?" Which is referred back to throughout the quiz and helps ground the user's answers. The art direction and visuals were wonderfully created and throughout related to each group — from a reliable Fiat 500 of the working class to the ultra-wealthy and their super-yachts.
Questions & answers
This is a quiz that takes the information you give it to visualise and contextualise each person's wealth. This is shown in the layout and typography, sharing oversized buttons and bold typography that isolates each question to make users really think. Blue was the new colour for Telegraph Money and I wanted to use various shades of it to draw the eye to key pieces of information across detailed charts and maps. Each result attempted to bring interactivity to the forefront and show information in differing ways.
Navigation
A first of it's kind for the Telegraph. I wanted to introduce a new navigation that encouraged users to go back and forth to update information. The experience asked a lot from the user, with a lot of information: income, partners, children, savings, investments, etc. Pushing users to be willing to take a step back and consider deeply. It also acted as a progress bar that filled up as users edged toward their results.
Results
To mark the end of each person's journey they were presented with a retro game show inspired ticker that plotted you between working class and wealthy. It also presented a wide range of data that helped users see how well-off they are compared to others in across the UK. We found this particularly interesting as this project was released during the height of the cost of living crisis and encouraged discussion between peers and in the news.
Conclusion
The page was completed by over 250,000 readers with over 2,000,000 page views. It’s still a hero page for Telegraph Money and introduced a new article template format for the Telegraph with other similar tools being considered for the future.
